Characters with and without spaces

Characters counts user-perceived Unicode characters, including whitespace and punctuation. Without spaces excludes whitespace such as spaces, tabs, and line breaks. For example, Hello world has 11 characters and 10 without spaces. Check which convention your assignment or destination uses.

Why emoji and accents can have different lengths

A visible character can contain more than one Unicode code point. The emoji 👍🏽 counts as one visible character, two code points, and four UTF-16 units. Technical systems can enforce a different kind of limit; inspect the code points and encoding units when the receiving system disagrees.

How are words counted?

Word boundaries use the page language and locale-aware segmentation rather than simply splitting on spaces. Hyphens, apostrophes, numbers, and languages without spaces can produce different results from a word processor. Use the required submission system as the final authority for strict limits.
